Successful Doctoral Defense by Karin Dyrstad

Karin Dyrstad, a PhD candidate at NTNU and a research associate of CSCW/PRIO successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in Trondheim on 8 May. The title of the dissertation is 'Civil War and the Transformation of Values'. It discusses the relationship between war experiences, ethnicity, and governance, building on surveys of public opinion from several countries in the Balkans. 

Ola Listhaug and Halvard Buhaug served as her dissertation advisers. John O'Loughlin (University of Colorado) and Erin Jenne (Central European University) were the opponents at the dissertation defense.

Successful Doctoral Defense by Rune Slettebak

Rune Slettebak, a PhD candidate at NTNU and a research associate of CSCW/PRIO successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in Trondheim on 3 May. The title of the dissertation is 'Climate Change, Natural Disasters, and the Risk of Violent Conflict'.

This PhD project assesses the relation between natural disasters triggered by extreme weather events and the risk of violent conflict. Han Dorussen (University of Essex) and Espen Sjaastad (Norwegian University of Life Sciences) were the opponents at the dissertation defense, while Indra de Soysa and Henrik Urdal were PhD supervisors.

Doctoral Research Fellowship on the Effectiveness of Non-Violence

The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) is announcing a PhD fellowship financed as part of a Grant from the Research Council of Norway for a project on “Effective Non-Violence? Resistance Strategies and Political Outcomes” led by Kristian Skrede Gleditsch of the University of Essex & PRIO. The project seeks to understand the conditions that foster the use of non-violent as opposed to violent tactics, focusing on the interaction between specific characteristics of different organizations, their constituencies, the state, and external actors.

Steven Pinker Visit

​Steven Pinker visited Oslo this week, with lectures at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, as well as at the University of Oslo (co-hosted by PRIO). Pinker also visited PRIO for an informal discussion with PRIO researchers, particularly those that have worked on the collection and analysis of the conflict data to which he refers frequently in his recent book on the decline of violence.

Climate Change Link to War Remains Tenuous

Does climate change sow the seeds of war? Until recently, most answers to this political question have been based on speculation. A landmark issue of Journal of Peace Research published by SAGE on behalf of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) investigates a host of potential causes for conflict.
