Ayla Gürel started working as a project consultant for what was then the PRIO's Cyprus Office in December 2002. Between February 2003 and April 2004, she was involved as the Turkish Cypriot coordinator in the PRIO administered "Public Information Project" to disseminate to the citizens objective and easily understood information on the "Basis for a Comprehensive Settlement of the Cyprus Problem" proposed by the UN. As a part of this project, she participated in the preparation of a website, production and distribution of booklets and leaflets, held many public seminars, facilitated discussions and made presentations on TV and radio.
She studied electrical engineering in Turkey and the USA. Since 1983 she has held several academic posts at the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) in Famagusta and at the University of Texas in Arlington, USA, until her early retirement in February 2002 from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at EMU.
She has numerous publications,mostly in her former field, and more recently on the Cyprus problem.
