Kolås, Åshild(2008) Theories of Conflict Resolution: Lessons for Northeast India? Issues of Peace and Conflict Resolution In Northeast India. : . [Forthcoming]

This paper outlines the most influential theories of conflict as developed by peace researchers, and takes stock of major academic debates on conflict resolution. The term ‘conflict resolution’ is here used as an overarching concept that covers a range of responses intended to control, resolve or transcend violent conflict, including conflict management, containment, negotiation or settlement, resolution, conciliation and transformation. The paper focuses on those theories and debates that can provide useful insights for rethinking responses to conflict in Northeast India, and identifies some of the possible lessons that could be drawn from studies of conflict resolution.
