A discussion of the role played by China, India, Brazil and South Africa in global politics. Emphasis is put on their cooperation in the Doha round of the WTO negotiations, and the question of whether this may form the basis for a more lasting alliance in global affairs.

Will China, India, Brazil and South Africa form a lasting political alliance in global affairs? The author finds that the four regional powers seek together in a global 'alliance' partly because US unilateralism is leaving room for new players, and partly because they are hampered by opposition from other powers in their own region from playing a leading regional role. The fate of the 'alliance' will to a great extent depend on Chinese policies
