Prospective Thesis Topic: China as a global security and development actor

China's assertive foreign policy under the lead of President Xi Jinping has prompted new debates over its rise. Discussions about China's growing global engagement focus on the country's military expansion abroad and its emergence as a global security actor. Alongside the PRC's more traditional engagement in trade and infrastructure building, and the provision of aid and development assistance, peace and security now also feature prominently in China's foreign policy agenda.

We welcome MA theses that question aspects of China's engagement in security and development in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, as well as theses examining the effects and implications of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and its components (i.e., health and digital technology). Key themes may include, but are not limited to, China's participation in peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and conflict mediation; its provision of military training, aid, development cooperation, and capacity building; the export of critical technology; and digital authoritarianism.
