This thesis tracks the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty from the USA–USSR summit in Glassboro, New Jersey, in June 1967 to the USA’s announcement that it would withdraw from the treaty on 13 December 2001. It describes how the integrity of the treaty was strained by differing practical and theoretical approaches to arms control, political circumstances, and technological evolution and proliferation. While some Soviet/Russian material has been used, reference has primarily been made to US primary sources and secondary literature.
