This thesis analyses the relation between religious affiliation and problems of coexistence through an analysis of association to sacred place. This is examined empirically through a study of the worldview of Jewish settlers in the West Bank city of Hebron. How do the settlers legitimize their presence, including their right to exclusively inhabit the territory? How do they perceive of other populations or religious congregations living in the same contested area? The thesis also examines the dialectics of sacred place, how the sanctity of the city of Hebron is constructed and the consequences of this construction.
