Large public institutions -- such as central banks -- are dependent on being trusted in the population, but they are also dependent on being shown trust by political authorities, not having their licence to operate or their mandates constantly changed. What are the philosophical and ethical underpinnings of the importance of word-keeping and trust? This article attempts to answer this question by focusing on ethical theories and their distinctive approaches to promise- and word-keeping.
