Topic: Histories of Intervention and Military Cooperation in Africa

Thesis timeframe: 2018–2020
Application deadline: 18 Oct 2017

Africa’s experience with the rest of the world has at many occasions been of a military nature. This has included arms trade and outright conquest, but often it takes the shape of various kinds of military cooperation where foreign powers train, equip and lead African soldiers as a part of building states, strengthening bilateral relations or deterring other actors. Especially theses researching the period from 1945 is of interest, but also older cases may be taken into consideration.

The project is thematically connected to proposals currently pending at the Research Council of Norway, called 'African armies and the consolidation of authoritarianism (AfriCon)' and 'The Impact of Security Force Assistance on State Fragility (SFAssist)'.
