Topic: Somali Refugee Education in Kenya

Thesis timeframe: Autumn 2019
Application deadline: 22 May 2019

This MA will be an integral part of the REBUILD project. The role of the MA will be to conduct independent research on young Somalis who have obtained their education in Kenya (Dadaab or Nairobi) in the past decade. The project studies the influence of this education on the lives and livelihoods of young Somalis based in Kenya, Somalia and the diaspora. Developing his or her own detailed proposal within the context of the larger project, the student will be asked to explore the question of whether and how education in Kenya has contributed to building durable futures for individual refugees and their local and transnational communities. The REBUILD project engages in qualitative fieldwork with a particular focus on the ways in which the education received in Kenya contributed to understandings of civic participation, a sense of belonging, and an understanding of rights. Contact Cindy Horst for a full project description.

Students from a range of social sciences and humanities backgrounds can apply. Somali language skills are recommended to facilitate the data collection.
