Democracy, Human Rights, and Small Arms Demand in Latin America

May 2011 – Dec 2003

MA Thesis at the University of Oslo, Dept. of Sociology. This thesis focuses on imports of small arms and light weapons in Latin America, in an attempt to assess the factors that influence demand for these weapons. In particular, the thesis examines whether a country’s respect for human rights influences the demand, and whether democracies and more repressive regimes differ in this aspect. The thesis is part of an ongoing project to establish new knowledge in the field of small-arms research.

Supervisors: Pål Meland and Per Arne Tufte UiO; Nils Petter Gleditsch, PRIO. The thesis was completed 15 September 2003, and defended 28 October 2003.
