Launched on 31 March 2008 the project, directed by the University of Cambridge, was awarded by the European Union a four-year grant to the investigations of the ways that destruction and selective reconstruction of cultural heritage impact the formation of national and regional identities.

The project was conducted by an interdisciplinary and international team including archaeologists, social anthropologists, geographers, historians, political scientists, psychologists and sociologists.

The project focused on five European case studies (Spain, France, Germany, Cyprus and Bosnia) to provide historical breadth and depth, while developing shared methodologies that will ensure that the results of this research will be extendable to other contexts.
