At the Fringe of Myanmar's Peace Process: The KIA and the Northern Brotherhood Alliance

Led by Marte Nilsen

Jan 2018 – Jan 2019

This project aims to engage stakeholders in the Myanmar peace process in a discussion about the inclusion of those ethnic armed groups that have not yet signed the National Ceasefire Agreement. The project’s primary contribution to this discussion will be information generated from an analysis of media reports and interviews with resource persons with special knowledge about the 4 member Northern Brotherhood Alliance: Kachin Independence Army (KIA), Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Arakan Army (AA).

The project will mainly focus on the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and its relations with the other alliance partners, and also with the United Wa State Army (UWSA) and Shan State Army-North (SSA-N). The relevance to local stakeholders will be ensured in close cooperation with the new Myanmar Institute of Peace and Security (MIPS), who will assist in recruiting interviewers/interpreters. Two stakeholder workshops will be organized in Myanmar, and the project results will be disseminated in a policy brief translated into Burmese, Jingpo, Shan and Chinese, and in a Burmese language opinion piece aimed at the Myanmar general public.

The project is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
