Unauthorized Entry at Europe’s Southern Borders: Routes, Dynamics and Fatalities

Conference paper

Carling, Jørgen (2004) Unauthorized Entry at Europe’s Southern Borders: Routes, Dynamics and Fatalities, presented at International Migration in Europe: New Trends, New Methods of Analysis, 25-27 November .

The paper provides a broad overview of unauthorized entry at Europe’s Southern borders. It draws upon results of the research project Europe and the developing world: Confronting migra-tion pressure. The value added of the research lies in the systematic compilation of information of unauthorized entry and migrant fatalities, a conceptual discussion of these concepts, the for-mulation of an analytical model of the dynamics of migration control dynamics, and the application of this framework to the analysis of Spanish border control measures. The paper draws upon different parts of the project and will be split into separate pieces and merged with other texts before final publication.
