UN Compulsory Arbitration: a Tough Test for China

Book chapter

Tønnesson, Stein (2016) UN Compulsory Arbitration: a Tough Test for China, in Sense and sensibility – Addressing the South China Sea disputes. Brussels: EU Institute of Security Studies (25–30).

The EUISS Report came just in time before the publication of the Arbitral Tribunal's award in the case Philippines v/China, concerning certain issues of interpretation of the law of the sea in the South China Sea. Stein Tønnesson discusses the implications of the Tribunal's first award in October 2015, which already implicitly invalidated any claim that China's 9-dashed line can be a maritime boundary.
