The Tonkin Gulf Agreements: a model of conflict resolution

Book Chapter

Tønnesson, Stein (2016) The Tonkin Gulf Agreements: a model of conflict resolution, in Jenner, C. J.; & Trong Thuy Tran, eds, The South China Sea: a Crucible of Regional Cooperation or Conflict-Making Sovereignty Claims?. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (151–170).

The chapter recounts how China and Vietnam resolved their boundary disputes on land and in the Tonkin Gulf during 1991-2000, with huge positive effects for trade and cooperation. Then it argues that some features of the Tonkin Gulf agreement may serve as a basis for conflict resolution also in other parts of the South China Sea.
