China's relationship with Afghanistan is deeply embedded in the broader China-Pakistan-Afghanistan geopolitical landscape. While Afghanistan is far less important to China economically than Pakistan, it has significant strategic relevance due to its location, security implications, and potential role in regional connectivity.
China has maintained diplomatic engagement with the Taliban since 2021 and, although limited, continued official and private investments in mining, energy and infrastructure.
Terrorist attacks and the low intensity war between Pakistan and Afghanistan challenges Chinese investments, influence and non-interference policy in what has become a highly volatile region.
