The Processes of International Negotiations

 

The Centre for the Study of Civil War at PRIO invites you to an open seminar with leading experts on International Negotiation. The seminar aims at giving participants efficient and in-depth knowledge of methods, standards, theories and practical experience in international negotiations.

Programme


10:00–12:00 The expert team members will address negotiation processes from various angles: the causes of international conflicts, ecological conflicts, hostage negotiations, the international dimension of conflicts and how to chair negotiations.

  • Professor William Zartman (John Hopkins University): Ripeness of Negotiations
  • Paul Meerts (Clingendael Instiute): Negotiating the Middle East: the entrapment phenomenon
  • Victor Kremenyuk (Institute for USA and Canada Studies, Russian Academy of Science): Three Dimensions of Negotiation. International Negotiation and Management of International Systems
  • Gunnar Sjöstedt (Swedish Institute of International Affairs):Difficulties of Negotiating Ecological Conflicts

 

Abstracts

13:00-16:00 Break-out sessions. Opportunity for focused group discussions on the five topics above, chaired by the individual expert on each. Note: There is only a limited amount of places available in each group. Please send a list of your prioritized group(s), preferably by referring to the name of the expert –also if you have already registered for the seminar but not indicated group preference.

Background

This seminar is a part of the so-calles PIN Road Show, in which leading experts on negotiations tour relevant institutions world-wide to disseminate information on the latest research on the processes of international negotiation and to encourage further research and teaching on the subject.


PIN (the Processes of International Negotiations Project) is developed and based at the non-governmental research organization International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria.
