Studying why groups choose specific strategies to push for political change will help us to understand both the causes of violence and the use of nonviolence. We will study this phenomenon in the context of conflicts that are violent and also in the context of “nonviolent conflicts.”
We are particularly interested in exploring how actions by states and the international community can encourage groups to use nonviolence, or to switch from violence to nonviolence, to pursue their aims.
