"It is inspiring to come together to learn from so many perspectives. Very appropriate for celebrating Women, Peace and Security.”

The Gender, Peace and Security: Resistance and Resilience workshop takes place during a year marking the 25th anniversary of the Women, Peace and Security—a milestone that coincides with growing polarization in political debates and policies around gender and women’s empowerment. As exemplified by the introductory quote from a workshop participant, addressing these challenges require research and dialogue across methods, theories, topical issues, and empirical contexts.

Chair Anna Maria Obermeier, University of Bergen and PRIO. Presenters Salome Owuonda, Africa Center for Sustainable and Inclusive Development, Suzanne Amélie Babongen Olemb, International Relations Institute of Cameroon, Maria Martin de Almagro, University if Ghent, and Rhodah Njeri, Kenyatta University. Louise Olsson

To that end, the workshop brings together scholars with diverse expertise, approaches, and backgrounds, including from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, South Africa, the United States, Cameroon, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, South Sudan, Sweden, Norway, and Kenya.

Discussions explore agency, resistance, and resilience in complementary contexts, such as displaced communities and grassroot roles and relations with political elites, post-war economic development, and international support. The workshop will conclude with a Policy-Research Dialogue aimed at drawing lessons on women’s agency and empowerment in peacebuilding and peace processes, and approaches to people-centred protection and resilience.

The workshop and dialogue are organized by Jana Krause, University of Oslo, in collaboration with leading members of the British Institute in Eastern Africa and the Rift Valley Institute and Louise Olsson, GPS Centre at the Peace Research Institute Oslo.
