The purpose of this project is to examine the progress towards consolidation of democracy and good governance, as an integral part of the peace process in Burundi. In light of theories about transitions from war to democracy, the project seeks to identify why and how certain unintended consequences have emerged following the installation of democratic institutions in 2005, and to examine how effectively the Government of Burundi is working to overcome these challenges.

The research will primarily be based on information gathered through interviews with stakeholders in the Burundi peace process. The output of the project will be a report and a policy brief targeted for policy makers involved in the peace process.
