Preventing a “Green Curse” in Africa: Mitigating Conflict Risks in Renewable Energy and Mining Projects and Sectors

Policy brief

Dupuy, Kendra; Carl Bruch & Tracy Stein (2024) Preventing a “Green Curse” in Africa: Mitigating Conflict Risks in Renewable Energy and Mining Projects and Sectors, PRIO Policy Brief, 3. Oslo: PRIO.

Africa is well positioned for the global green energy transition with its vast renewable energy resources and significant deposits of critical minerals needed to produce renewable energy technologies. Yet, if the energy transition is not well managed, there is a risk that the green energy transition could trigger conflict. This brief reviews existing policy and legal measures that can help reduce the potential for conflict in Africa’s green energy transition.

This review was part of a large research project on the potential for a resource curse in renewable energy sectors in Africa, published in 2023.
