Police communication in Norway: The transition from Twitter/X to the Police Log

Policy brief

Gjendem, Lars & Åshild Kolås (2026) Police communication in Norway: The transition from Twitter/X to the Police Log, PRIO Policy Brief, 1. Oslo: PRIO.

In Norway, the police are responsible for informing the public about ongoing emergency situations and incidents. Since 2011, Twitter (now X) has been an important platform for communicating with the public. Initially, the use of this platform offered advantages – immediate usability, large reach and opportunities for two-way communication. However, concerns about data ownership, functionality and data control increased over time. In 2023, the police developed their own communication platform: the Police Log (Politiloggen). This brief discusses the concerns that brought about this change and the implications of moving from X to the Police Log as one of the primary emergency information channels.
