The release of Kimi K3, a powerful new open-weight AI model from the Chinese startup Moonshot AI, has intensified concerns that Chinese firms are closing the performance gap with leading U.S.-based frontier labs. Yet the debate around Kimi K3 has focused overwhelmingly on what China’s AI progress means for economic competition and national security. Far less attention has been paid to another consequence: what the global spread of Chinese AI models could do to the information environment in which we all live.
