To support and advance research and innovation, the European Union has implemented a series of multi-annual Framework Programmes (FPs) since 1984. These programmes are designed to fund collaborative and frontier research across Europe. The current programme, Horizon Europe, runs from 2021 to 2027 and builds on the success of its predecessors, including Horizon 2020 (2014–2020) and FP7 (2007–2013). Each framework has played a crucial role in strengthening Europe's scientific and technological base, fostering innovation, and addressing societal challenges.
PRIO has actively participated in numerous EU-funded research projects for over a decade, both as a partner and as a coordinator.
One of its most significant recent contributions was through the MIGNEX project – Aligning Migration Management and the Migration-Development Nexus, led by Jørgen Carling. Running for six years and involving nine international partners, MIGNEX is considered one of the largest EU-funded research projects on migration to date. It generated an extensive dataset from ten countries of origin and transit, producing over 80 publications and offering valuable insights to policymakers and researchers on the complex links between migration and development.
