On May 29 PRIO invites to a half-day seminar on the theme authorities, crisis management and social media. We present findings from our project DIGICOM, a lecture by our guest speaker Alf Tore Meling *, and a presentation by Annastiina Papunen ** on the European Parliament use of social media.

We wish for input from our stakeholders.

The seminar lasts from 9:00 until 12:00 and light lunch is served at 12.

9:00 Myndighetene og sosiale medier - før, under og etter kriser (Authorities and social media – before, during and after crises), Alf Tore Meling (in Norwegian)

  • Over the past five years Meling has followed local and national emergency authorities' emergency communications focusing on the use of social media. In his presentation he will draw a comprehensive picture, pointing out strengths and weaknesses and give us insight into relevant analyses and cases.

10:15 Engaging dialogue with citizens. Panel presentations on the European Parliament experience and on DIGICOM research findings (in English)

  • In this session, European Parliament Web Editor Annastiina Papunen presents the institutional strategy to engage dialogue with European citizens, as well as the main challenges. Also, DIGICOM researchers Professor Øyvind Ihlen and Postdoc Joel Rasmussen discuss trends and research findings on organizations' use of social media in connection with risks and crises.

* Alf Tore Meling runs his own businessas a strategy and communications consultant. Meling is co-author of the books Sosiale medier i all offentlighet (Social media in public management) (2011), Krisekommunikasjon 2.0 (Crisis communication 2.0) (2012), and Veikart for sosiale medier (Roadmap for social media) (2012). He is also responsible for the public inquries Sosiale kommuner 2014/14 (Social municipalities 2013/14) and Sosiale kommuner og universell utforming 2014/15 (Social municipalities and universal design 2014/15).

** Annastiina Papunen is working as a Web Editor in the European Parliament, Directorate-General for Communication. She also does social media community management for the Parliament (Facebook, Twitter, Reddit) and helped coordinate social media projects during the European Elections of 2014. She likes travelling, spreadsheets and Eurovision.
