For Afghanistan, 2017 started with considerable uncertainty.
The new US President, Donald Trump, has said little about his future policy on Afghanistan. This creates uncertainty also about the future direction that other major powers – China and Russia in particular – will follow on Afghanistan. Also in the neighborhood, there are considerable uncertainties. The relationship between India and Pakistan has deteriorated severely. The same goes for the relationship between Iran and Saudi Arabia. In Central Asia, stability at home is political priority number one, yet unrest there is closely related to the situation in Afghanistan.
For Afghanistan this is a challenging situation. The goal is both to prevent conflicts in the larger region to further instigate unrest in Afghanistan itself, and to maintain international support for its statebuilding project.

In this breakfast seminar, H.E. Hekmat Khalil Karzai, will share his thought on Afghanistan’s foreign policy in the present regional and global situation.
Mr. Karzai is Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. He is formerly the Director of the Center for Conflict and Peace Studies (CAPS) in Kabul, and is a major contributor to public debate, policy formulation, as well as to diplomatic processes.
