BackgroundProf.Birgit Brock-Utne was substituting Sverre Lodgaard as a Researcher at PRIO 1981-1982 and started her doctoral work in peace education and the culture of peace while at PRIO. At the University of Oslo she taught a course in peace education for many years. She completed her doctorate in peace studies in 1988 and it was published in 1989. Her main books within the field of peace education are:
1982: Rauhan Kasvatus."Rauha saa alkunsa naisten mielissa". (Women and peace.."Peace starts in the minds of women.") - A Finnish translation of a commissioned paper written in English for a UNESCO conference in New Delhi, a 1981 project for PRIO. In the years 1988-1992 she got her professorship at the UiO transferred to the University of Dar es Salaam,Tanzania. The last twenty years she has been working more with education and development in Africa. Main book:

She has been teaching peace studies in Korea (at several universities), Japan (University of Hiroshima where she spent four months), Austria (European University of Peace and the University of Vienna), Spain (Jaime Primero Universidad), the US (University of Antioch (four months), University of Oregon, Ohio State University, Indiana University (four months), Iowa State University) and been a key-note lecturer on the Culture of Peace at many international conferences.
