Political Economy of Governance and Conflict (PEGC): A Nordic Network

Led by Nils Petter Gleditsch

Jan 2004 – Dec 2006

The Nordic Network on the Political Economy of Governance and Conflict (PEGC) was based at the Centre for the Study of Civil War at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO). The network was funded for the period 2004-06 by a grant from the Nordic Research Board (NordForsk) The main objectives of the Nordic Network were to:

  • Promote better training for doctoral students through institutional exchange of students and specialized doctoral courses
  • Work for methodological integration in the social sciences, particularly between political science and economics
  • Contribute to the study of governance and conflict.

Graduate training in economics and political science has been separated by theoretical and methodological differences. Peace research as such has hardly been taught at the doctoral level, with the exception of the university departments in Uppsala and Gothenburg. Recently there has been considerable international theoretical and methodological cross-fertilization between economics and political science. PEGC promotes similar developments at the Nordic level. It will emphasize theory-building through formal models of strategic interaction and institutions, as well as systematic empirical testing of such models.
