The Cyprus peace negotiations have only recently acknowledged education as an area of concern, with the set-up of the Technical Committee on Education in November 2015. The conference seeks to explore the prospects and challenges regarding education in a post-settlement Cyprus, inviting international and local academics and experts to share their findings on federal educational systems.

The objective of the conference is to propose ways in which federal education policies may take shape under a structure that has both federal and decentralized elements. These proposals will be informed by a comparative discussion of different systems, such as those implemented in Canada, Spain, and Ireland. In this sense, the conference aims to discuss both general concerns for federal education policy, as well as specific issues arising in post-conflict settings. Through a study of these systems, their advantages and shortcomings will be evaluated, providing a basis for solid proposals that might be applicable to the case of Cyprus.
