This event is part of PRIO's European Security Week and is organized by the CENTREPEACE project.
Join us for a discussion on the strategic choices being made by European leaders and how they are remaking European security. European security is being rapidly rethought under the combined pressures of threats from Russia, wars in Ukraine and in the Middle East, and the end of leadership by the United States. The EU has expanded its competences while national governments try to coordinate their actions across several areas. Some of the most significant developments have concerned defence industry policy, energy policy and relations with Eastern European states.
The panelists will discuss themes such as:
- Will the ongoing crises push Europe toward greater integration in areas related to security?
- Can Europe simultaneously reduce dependence on energy imports and transition to a low-carbon future?
- What is the future role of states in Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus where there is a competition for influence with Russia?
- How can European states and the EU govern the very rapid innovation of defence and security technology?
The speakers will be:
Zinaida Bechná, Assistant Professor at Masaryk University whose work focuses upon security issues in Central and Eastern Europe, in particular the geopolitical dynamics shaping EU policy regarding states bordering Russia.
Bruno Oliveira Martins, Senior Researcher at PRIO who studies European security governance, the security implications of cutting-edge technologies, and the EU's evolving role as a security actor.
Jocelyn Mawdsley, Professor of European Politics at Newcastle University who is an expert on European security, defence policy, and the development of the political economy of Europe's defence production.
Veli-Pekka Tynkkynen, Professor Russian Environmental Studies at the Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki, whose research examines the intersection of geopolitics and energy policy, and relations between Russia and Europe.
The discussion will be moderated by Nicholas Marsh of PRIO.
