Ukoha Ukiwo's primary affiliation is with the Department of Political and Administrative Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He is also Deputy Programme Manager of the Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme, funded by DFID. Ukiwo was appointed a PRIO Global Fellow in 2014.
On 14 February, the population of Nigeria, Africa’s largest democracy, were supposed to go to the polls to elect a new president. This election might have proven a watershed in Nigerian history. The security problems in the north-east of the country have made the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) postpone the election until 28 March. This may prove an effective barrier for the opposition, and increase the risk of an explosion of violence both before and during the election.
PRIO Global Fellow Ukoha Ukiwo is visiting PRIO this week (19-23. January). Ukoha holds a PhD in development studies from the University of Oxford. He is currently the Programme Manager at the Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme, a DFID funded initiative aimed at helping Nigerians better manage conflict and ensure a reduction in cases of violent conflict. He has also been Senior Lecturer at the Dept. of Political and Administrative Studies, University of Port Harcourt, and been a visiting scholar both at University of California, Berkley and the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
While at PRIO Ukoha will work together with Gudrun Østby and Siri Aas Rustad with particular focus on the upcoming presidential election in Nigeria in early February. Ukoha will hold a seminar on this topic Friday 23rd at PRIO.
