Workshop on Migrant Integration and Transnationalism in Contemporary Europe

Oct 2013 – Oct 2013

Call for abstracts – Deadline 15 August 2013

Objective and scope:

The workshop seeks to further explore relationships between migrant integration and transnationalism in the context of contemporary Europe. The primary objective of the workshop is to share, discuss and receive substantial feedback on work in progress which in one way or another addresses this theme. We would like to bring together researchers that combine a focus on both migrant integration and transnationalism, and encourage studies that see these not as exclusive, but rather as concurrent dimensions of migrant lives. We therefore invite submissions of abstracts for papers that explore the complex mechanisms underlying migrant integration and transnationalism, including attention to differences depending legal or residential status, and on the capacity and desire to engage in both integration and transnationalism. We encourage contributions which:

  • Engage with the implications of the current financial crisis, such as e.g. the circumstances of migrants in, or from, Southern Europe
  • Engage with the situation of migrant groups with different legal status (asylum seekers, refugees, undocumented migrants, labour migrants)
  • Engage with the relationships between migrant integration and transnationalism at both theoretical and empirical levels, including one or several cases
  • Are based on qualitative or quantitative approaches, from a broad disciplinary range

Expected contribution:

In order to facilitate targeted contributions that address the core theme of the workshop, we ask participants to prepare papers of 5 000 – 8 000 words. The written contributions will be circulated in advance.

Format and costs:

The workshop will have a limited number of participants and will not be open to the public. There is a modest budget available for covering travel and accommodation expenses for a limited number of participants. There is no participation fee.

Context and host:

The workshop is organized by the Standing Committee on Interactions of Migrant Integration and Transnationalism in Europe (IMITE) funded by the IMISCOE network. The Standing Committee consists of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), Maastricht Graduate School of Governance (MGSoG) and Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). The workshop is hosted by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).
