In this article, we develop an agenda for better conceptualization and measurement of conflict-related determinants of migration. Our systematic literature review underscores the need to move beyond binary approaches of conflict vs. non-conflict and avoid relying only on national-level data when investigating links between migration and conflict. Drawing on migration patterns among South Sudanese refugees, we suggest conceptual approaches and methodological avenues for more robust analysis, stressing attention to sub-national and individual-level data. This promises a more refined understanding of the interplay of conflict dynamics with both mobility and immobility, while remaining cognizant of people’s agency and the role of time.
