Experiences of war and women’s changing roles in Ukraine

Women play important roles in Ukrainian society. They serve in the general workforce, as caregivers, peacemakers and community leaders, and in the military. In December 2024–January 2025, the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace and Security (GPS) conducted a survey in Ukraine investigating attitudes towards the role of women in these different sectors, and whether such attitudes differ during times of war and peace. The survey also investigated perceptions of crime, trust in institutions, and knowledge of conflict-related sexual violence and domestic violence. In this policy brief, we present the data on attitudes towards women’s roles in society during and after war. This is the second of three briefs presenting survey evidence on attitudes and perceptions in wartime Ukraine.
