As impact is increasingly found in non-academic careers, what skills do PhD students need now?

Interest in contributing to address current global challenges, the tight academic job market, and the growth of research-intensive positions outside academia have made hyphenated careers that combine research and impact skills increasingly common. Based on the recommendations of an expert forum, we argue that students and institutions have much to gain from taking the impact-related competencies developed through doctoral research more seriously. To move forward, universities and research institutions must create career conditions that enable scholars to perform at their best. To make meaningful societal contributions, scholars need the time and resources to develop impact skills and networks, and they need greater formal recognition if they choose a research-to-impact career path.
