This seminar is a tribute to Dr. Trond Bakkevig, who himself has devoted much of his time to religious dialogue, among other places in South Africa, the Balkans, and the Middle East. The panel will include the perspectives of academics, diplomats and religious leaders who themselves have been directly engaged in religious dialogue.

In recent years, there has been an exploding interest in religious dialogue as a tool for the management or resolution of violent conflicts, as well as for enhancing the building of peace.

  • What is driving the newborn faith in religion as a political instrument?
  • What is different in 'new' religious diplomacy?
  • When is an involvement of religious actors, networks and narratives likely to have the largest positive impact?
  • Under what circumstances may such an involvement be harmful?

We have invited the following to present their views and engage in a panel debate:

The discussion will be chaired by Kristian Berg Harpviken, Deputy Director, PRIO.
