Laura K Field offers a nuanced and provocative account of the ongoing transformation of American politics. Rather than interpreting it as driven merely by grassroots anger and anti-intellectual populism, she argues that the US is witnessing a profound ideological realignment – possibly the most significant since World War II. Field takes the MAGA movement seriously. It does not merely represent a descent into ignorance but is supported by a network of intellectuals, including scholars from leading universities. What has emerged, she contends, is not a vacuum of knowledge but a competing knowledge system, which challenges America’s long-dominant liberal internationalist consensus. Central to her analysis are three intellectual currents: First, a strand inspired by Leo Strauss and associated with the Claremont Institute seeks to revive what it sees as the original principles of the American founding – natural rights and universal truths – against what it holds to be modern relativism. Second, post-liberals thinkers such as Patrick Deneen at Notre Dame and Adrian Vermeule at Harvard criticize liberalism for eroding moral order and advocate a stronger, value-oriented state. Third, a resurgent nationalism, organized around the Edmund Burke Foundation and figures like Yoram Hazony emphasizes sovereignty, cultural cohesion, and economic protectionism. Field also highlights the role of think tanks, media personalities, and tech figures in connecting these ideas to political practice. Trump himself appears less as an ideologue than as a catalyst who mobilizes and unifies disparate strands. The strength of Furious Minds lies in mapping this intellectual landscape. It pays less attention to the socioeconomic roots of popular discontent. Even so, Field provides a compelling corrective to simplistic narratives about Trump and the MAGA movement.
