PRIO is pleased to announce that its Centre on Gender, Peace and Security (GPS Centre) has entered into a new multi-year funding agreement with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since its establishment in 2015, the GPS Centre has received sustained and generous support from the Ministry. Over the past decade, our researchers have published numerous articles and book chapters in leading academic outlets. This research has played a significant role in shaping Norway’s policies on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.
The Centre has educated hundreds of Norwegian and international students on gender, peace, and conflict, and has trained more than 340 senior-level peace mediation practitioners in integrating gender perspectives and women’s participation into peace processes. The GPS Centre also serves as the operational partner for the Nordic Women Mediators Network and was instrumental in the establishment of the Global Alliance of Regional Women Mediators Networks.
The new funding agreement will enable the Centre to build on this work and further strengthen its role at PRIO as a hub for research, teaching and training on the gendered dimensions of peace and conflict, with a particular emphasis on advancing the women, peace and security agenda.
“This new agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recognizes the importance of the gender research carried out at PRIO and underscores the value of research-based policy development. At a time when the women, peace and security agenda is under increasing pressure globally, it is reassuring that the Norwegian government continues to prioritize this work,” says Centre Director Torunn L. Tryggestad.
