Friday, we got to know that a large project has been funded by the Research Council of Norway's INFRASTRUKTUR initiative, that aims to build up relevant, up-to-date infrastructure that is accessible to the research community, to various private and public sector user groups, and to the general public.

Although this years ISA Convention was cancelled, the annual awards have still been announced.
Nils Weidmann (former PRIO researcher and long-standing PRIO associate) has been awarded the prestigious Karl Deutsch Award, an annual mid-career award that recognizes scholars in International Relations under the age of 40 or within ten years of defending their dissertation.
The winner of the award ‘is judged to have made (through a body of publications) the most significant contribution to the study of International Relations and Peace Research.’

The book Transnational Dynamics of Civil War (Cambridge University Press) presents research completed in 2010-12 by one of the working groups of PRIO’s Center for the Study of Civil War (CSCW). The authors take on the challenge of explaining how cross-border groups and interactions shape the course of civil wars and the potentials for ending the violence.
The Program on Order, Conflict, and Violence at Yale University MacMillan Center announces a conference on Conference on Paramilitaries, Militias, and Civil Defense Forces in Civil Wars, to be held 19-20 October 2012.
Jake Shapiro and Nils Weidmann's paper "Talking About Killing: Cell Phones, Collective Action, and Insurgent Violence in Iraq" was presented on the frequently-read academic blog called the Monkey Cage. The question is, does improved communication as provided by modern cell phone technology affect the production of violence during insurgencies?
The August issue of the Journal of Conflict Resolution is a special issue dedicated to output from the Disaggregating Civil War project. This project (GROW) is a collaboration between CSCW (PRIO), University of Essex and ETH Zürich. This special issue is edited by Lars-Erik Cederman and Kristian Skrede Gleditsch.
We are delighted to announce that this year's Stuart A. Bremer Graduate Travel Award is given to Nils B. Weidmann, ETH Zurich, for his paper "Violence and the Changing Ethnic Map: The Endogeneity of Territory and Conflict in Bosnia" that was presented at the 2008 Jan Tinbergen European Peace Science Conference in Amsterdam.
