Are peace negotiations solely about power and interests, or do norms and values also shape negotiation dynamics and outcomes? This guide explores four dimensions of peace negotiation processes from an ethical perspective: positions (what are the stances of the conflict parties?), participation (who is included?), practices (how do negotiators behave?) and procedures (how, and based on which principles, are negotiations organized?). Each dimension is coupled with key ethical questions. The guide is designed to inform strategies and analyses of negotiation and mediation, formulating questions that need to be addressed for peace negotiations to be ethically justifiable.
