In 2025, the world marks the 25th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) – a landmark commitment to advancing women’s roles in peacebuilding and security efforts. Over the past eight years, the WPS Index has documented steady global progress in women’s status. Nigeria, after experiencing several years of decline in its WPS Index ranking, has shown a turnaround in 2025 back to the levels of 2017. This improvement could signal renewed momentum in promoting gender equality and empowering women across key dimensions of peace and security. However, much is left to do. This policy brief describes some of the current initiatives taken in Nigeria to strengthen WPS.
