The book was originally published in German in 2023, and the English version has more updates than just a new Preface that describes Donald Trump as an embodiment of chauvinism. Fisher’s narrative has a strong personal touch and is aimed more at general audience rather than the academic one. She believes that an effective response to Russia’s threat requires reconsolidation of liberal democracy, first of all in Europe. She defines modern chauvinism as a ‘triad of nationalism/imperialism, sexism and autocracy’ (p. 15), and this three-dimensional perspective adds depth to her analysis of the causes and the durability of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. She maintains that the militaristic tendencies of Putin’s regime is only a part of the problem, so ‘even in the case of democratization, chauvinism will continue to determine Russian politics’ (p. 120). Support for Russian liberal networks and media is essential, but the plain fact is that they are increasingly disconnected from the ‘society of perpetrators’ (p. 105). Europe has to work hard on addressing its vulnerability to domestic drivers of right-wing populism, so the increase of defence expenditures needs to proceed in parallel with investments aimed at reducing inequality. The central issue in building a cooperative European security order is Ukraine, and if presently the onus is the military aid, in the post-war future, the problem will be the reconstruction and rehabilitation, complicated by Russia’s hostility, because reconciliation remains a ‘distant prospect’ (p. 180). This feminist perspective, with its inherent emphasis on demilitarization and peace over security, has produced a challenging analysis of risks posed by the deeply rooted chauvinism and mobilize the societies facing this danger for making necessary sacrifices.
