The team successfully completed its first kick-off workshop for the EXPAND project, held in Hargeisa, Somaliland, from 25-27 November. The workshop brought team members together to build relationships, exchange experiences, and discuss plans for the initial phase of fieldwork. A key aim was to develop a shared understanding of research methods in preparation for the project’s main fieldwork scheduled for 2026.
During the three-day workshop, participants collaboratively developed specific research tools and explored strategies to support equitable and inclusive conceptual and analytical work. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration across the team and ensuring methodological alignment from the outset of the project.
The workshop included nine external participants and featured sessions on a range of research and analytical methods, including applied techniques, use of audio-visual tools and comparison versus context-specific approaches. In addition, the agenda emphasised collaborative approaches and co-creation. Overall, the workshop served as a foundation for effective teamwork, drawing on insights from both prior fieldwork experiences and relevant academic literature.
