The Syrian civil war (2011-2025) devastated the country and created one of the largest refugee crises in contemporary history. Most of the refugees have resided in the neighbouring states: Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. PRIO researchers have over several years been part of various smaller research projects focusing on Syria and on the Syrian refugee crisis and have since 2026 led the RCN financed project “Leveraging Protracted Refugee Situations: Comparing how Lebanon and Turkey have responded to Syrian displacement” (starting 01.04.2026) in collaboration with the American University in Beirut.
