The PRIO project “On Fair Terms: The Ethics of Peace Negotiations and Mediation” (FAIR) organized a workshop in Cyprus in partnership with the PRIO Cyprus Centre, PRIO Middle East Centre, and the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace and Security, 19-21 October.

The workshop brought together scholars and seasoned practitioners in the field of peace negotiations and mediation to explore the challenges and prospects for ethics in negotiations. Discussions examined questions surrounding parties, positions, practices, procedures, and principles. On the 21st, a public seminar in Nicosia addressed the roles of norms and values in the Cyprus peace talks and Sergio Jaramillo Caro, former High Commissioner of Peace in the Colombian peace process, gave a keynote address on core ethical dilemmas that peace negotiators currently face. The seminar was followed by a reception where chair of the PRIO board Trine Skei Gade gave a moving speech on the urgency of peacemaking and the role of peace research therein.
