Several PRIO researchers feature in the 2026 edition of the Stanford / loannidis Author Ranking, a widely used global index identifying the most-cited researchers across scientific disciplines.

Among the top 2% of researchers worldwide based on career-long citation impact are PRIO researchers Nils Petter Gleditsch, Halvard Buhaug, Jørgen Carling, Håvard Hegre and Cindy Horst. The ranking also includes several associated external researchers including Kristian Skrede Gleditsch, Scott Gates and Nina von Uexkull.

In addition, PRIO researchers Marta Bivand Erdal, Gudrun Østby and Henrik Urdal are ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists based on their research impact during 2025.

"These rankings reflect both the breadth of PRIO’s expertise and the relevance of our research in helping society understand a rapidly changing world. They are a reminder that rigorous research on war, peace and global change has never been more necessary," said PRIO Acting Director Haakon Gjerløw.

Citation metrics are one indicator of scientific influence, and should not be seen as a direct measure of research quality. Nonetheless, the strong representation of PRIO researchers in this year’s rankings is testimony to the worldclass research environment at PRIO.
