Two former PRIO associates, both working group leaders at our Centre for the Study of Civil War (2002–12), have been honoured for their outstanding academic contributions.
CSCW Working Goroup Leader Kalle Moene was announced the 2011 recepient of the Award for Excellence in Comminication of Science at the opening of the Norwegian National Research Festival 23 September. The award is given by the Research Council of Norway. Its goal is to reward the use of original, creative communication measures, and the initiative must be directed toward the general public. The winner must have demonstrated outstanding ability and innovation in communicating the results of his or her research.
The article 'Institutions and the resource curse' by CSCW researchers Halvor Mehlum, Karl Ove Moene, in addition to Ragnar Torvik (Economic Journal 116(508): 1-20), is appointed 'Fast-Breaking Paper' status at ISI Essential Science Indicators. The article was published in January 2006 and has 11 citations as of 6th Jan at the ISI Web of Science. This is quite outstanding for a social science article.
Interview with the authors...
This doctoral course will explore the 'paradox of plenty' (or 'resource curse'), whereby an abundance of natural resources seems to lead to negative economic and political outcomes, at least in recent decades. The course will be held at the Department of Economics at NTNU. It is co-sponsored by the CSCW and the Nordic doctoral network on ‘The Political Economy of Governance and Conflict' (PEGC), with a grant from the Nordic Research Board (NordForsk).
