European Research Council (ERC)

The European Research Council (ERC) provides highly competitive funding to support ground-breaking research across all scientific disciplines. These grants enable researchers to pursue ambitious, curiosity-driven projects at the frontiers of knowledge. With a strong emphasis on scientific excellence, ERC funding allows researchers to freely define their own topics and methodologies. Receiving an ERC grant is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious achievements in academia. Notably, several ERC grantees have gone on to receive Nobel prizes.

For several years, PRIO has consistently ranked amongst the top five recipients of ERC grants in Norway- remarkably, as the only non-University in that list. Given its relatively small size compared to major universities, PRIO is potentially the highest per capita recipient of ERC funding among Norwegian research institutions.
