Five years ago this month, on May 3, 2016, the U.N. Security Council adopted its first resolution on the protection of health care in conflict. Resolution 2286, supported by 80 states, included steps states could take to mitigate such attacks.

What does disarmament of a non-state armed group symbolize for civilians? How do cultural practices change after disarmament? What type of new meanings can weapons have in the aftermath of civil conflicts?

This event brings together researchers and policymakers to discuss how to support civilian strategies of self-preservation based in the recently published volume “Civilian Protective Agency in Violent Settings” (Oxford University Press, 2023).
